The new mobo has 2 SATA ports onboard, so with the controller card Im already using I can have up to 6 SATA disks. I've slapped in one of the cheap IDE (PATA) cards I have to keep the smaller IDE drives going. (The old board has an additional IDE Connector.) So there are 4 different HDD controllers!!

Also got a shiny new 1.5TB Seagate SATA drive and chucked that in... Had some issues after that upgrade. Machine keep crashing all the time... Took me a couple of days to realise that it was some bad RAM causing the problem, so now its running 512MB instead of 1GB

After removing the RAM its running stable now. But the constant crashing had caused some corruption on my boot disk :S (the fun never ends!)
So I have reinstalled the OS... Instead of using ubuntu (had Xubuntu on there before) I have gone with Arch Linux.

Arch linux has what they call a 'rolling release' which means that unlike Ubuntu which has a new version out every 6months it just updates the current system. Much nicer on a server where you dont want to be reinstalling or having major upgrades break shit.
Also Ubuntu installs quite a bit of software (Open Office, CD burner software, image editors, email clients etc etc) which are not required for a file server. Running an update will update all that stuff which Im not using anyway
Arch linux installs only a base system and then you have to install anything (and everything) else that you want. Much nicer. But more work to get there!

Anyway its all up again and good to go for the LAN this weekend!
Darktower now has 5 SATA disks - room for one more (1x1.5TB, 1x1TB, 3x750GB) and 4x200GB IDE disks. Total 5550GB.

Also got a new monitor for my main system. A 22" Samsung widescreen. 2ms 8000:1 contrast ratio. Is nice.

Got my ticket for Iron Maiden yesterday, internet presales!
Now I just have to wait for Feb 20....

In other news, Ion, one of my cats went missing for a week and a half. Turned up one morning like nothing had happened. Looking very well fed too! I'd pretty much given her up for dead, so it was a good surprise.
wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-49380928899939485782008-09-04T21:16:00.000-07:002008-09-04T21:19:38.808-07:00Death MagneticJeez, mention Metallica and then a day later the album leaks...

And yes its very good. I recommend the following:

XKCD: A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math and language.
Questionable Content
Wigu: There is some odd twisted stuff going on here...
and my latest find...
Gunnerkrigg Court: Magic and science, great writing here, I want to know what's happening!

Also I have been listening to the new Metallica tracks that have made there way onto the intertubes, and they actually sound ok. The forthcoming album might actually be a return to form... But I won't be holding my breath :Pwolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-21320419773684142602008-08-14T02:11:00.000-07:002008-08-14T02:13:23.038-07:00Dont bother Calling for the PriestJudas Priest suck for cancelling their show.

Nostradamus is overblown and uninspired :Pwolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-76415849550607166862008-03-16T15:19:00.000-07:002008-03-16T15:57:40.973-07:00The REAL reason we use LinuxShamelessly stolen post today, but this guy has hit the nail on the head.
The REAL reason we use Linux

Its all about the fun!wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-69640585760440981172008-03-12T22:25:00.000-07:002008-03-12T22:29:04.115-07:00Ze Germans are coming!German Wasps have taken residence!
They shall be evicted later tonight when they become torpid...wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-42765892106095328042008-03-06T17:28:00.000-08:002008-03-06T17:34:30.086-08:00Last FM extrasJust been looking at some of the extras on the last.fm site. http://build.last.fm/
Check out the extra stats tool.

See my Artist's wave graph here.
Makes it very easy to see who my favourite artists are and who Ive been listening to lately.

My other site discovery today is http://www.knickerpicker.com/dressing-room.asp
Which kept me amused for a while this morning. :)wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-13140765274056611802007-12-11T20:49:00.000-08:002007-12-11T21:24:39.737-08:00UpdatesOnce again I have been completely slack and not posted for months :S I have thought about it a couple of times and not gotten anywhere...

October Missions were good. The fishing was cancelled due to bad weather. But The rest all happened... Motorhead were awesome - Can't say the same about the support acts. Now I like a bit of extreme/death metal as much as the next guy, but supporting Motorhead? It seemed a bit odd. Only caught the last to support acts, Dawn of Azazel and 8 Foot Sativa. DoA sucked complete ass, their sound was complete crap, just a muddy noise. 8 Foot were a lot better sounding but still didn't do a lot for me.
Motorhead were as I was expecting rather loud, I had earplugs, and used them! One of my mates commented that I must be getting older, and I replied 'Yeah, and wiser!'
They played a lot of songs that I knew and a few that I wasn't familiar with. Overkill was the final encore - They left the stage with feedback still wailing :)
And I didnt realise until after I had done some research that Mikkey Dee is the drummer for Motorhead, I thought the name sounded familar... and he was with King Diamond in the 80's (on Them and Conspiracy) His drum solo was amazing!

Theres another big concert coming up over Easter next year - Rock2WGTN with Ozzy, Kiss & Alice Cooper (more to be announced) I'm keen to go, but it's going to be an expensive event... I have seen Ozzy and Kiss before. Kiss put on a wicked show, but the Ozzy gig suffered from poor sound, it was held at the Logan Campbell Centre which should explain everything :(
Anyway, I think I will wait till the final lineup is announced and see what I think then.

As I said earlier the fishing trip in October was cancelled, but I did get out on the water Sunday just gone (9th Dec) and had a great day.
I've not been out fishing a lot in the past but it was all good. Was up at 5am and on the road at 6am. We got to Kawhia and boarded The Dove at 7. We were well offshore and out fishing til after 4pm There were 14 of us fishing and we caught a total of 90 Snapper. The limit is 10 each, so we were still well under that. We divided the fish up on the wharf ended up with 6 Snapper 2 Gurnard and 2 Kawhai each!
I personally caught 3 Snapper two of which were good 6 or 7 pounders. Also got a couple of Kawhai and a gurnard. Aside fronm that we were also catching Barracuda which are no good. They are full of worms and are inedible. They got thrown straight over the side again. And also Mackerel which were bait fish.
The weather was very overcast and a couple of light showers. But it was good as it meant we didn't have to worry about sunburn.
So my freezer is full of fish now, tis yum :D

Coming up to Christmas holidays now, couple of weeks to go... We have our Work function this Friday, having it out at one of the rural halls. The theme is 'medieval feast' However I don't do fucking costumes. :P
Then Saturday is the LAN club Christmas event - Which will include drinks.

Haven't got anything planned for the break at this point. Although I intend to stay home for Xmas day. Had a blow out with Mum quite a few years back now, so stay away from the Olds at Christmas. The one time I have been back since then as soon as I walked in the the first thing Mum said was negative - and I didn't want to be there anyway so it didn't help.
I always maintain that Christmas is for Kids and Christians and I am neither!
~wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-21704195300729729152007-09-06T12:46:00.001-07:002007-09-08T14:38:08.996-07:00SlackingBeen slack and haven't written anything for ages...

I was sick for a few weeks, nasty chesty cold, once I went to the Dr and got some antibiotics it cleared up very quickly.

I had an appearance in the latest PC World, just a little one in their top 100 list. They quoted me on Flickr

We had our gaming LAN a couple of weeks back, very poor turn out, I think we covered the hall costs and not much more. Didnt get too much leech, but it was good to catch up with the regulars.
Been having some minor issues with our LAN website lately, getting heaps of spam user signups, lots of porn and pill links and so forth in their profiles. I have been deleteing about 10 a day of them lately. Not sure what we can do about it. Although I do know that our phpbb software is out of date, and I dont have enough information to upgrade it. What I would like it to be able to set it so that new signups have to be confirmed before they are added to the user list.
Another good alternative would be to lock the site to NZ IP adressess only.
Scorpion is looking into it, he will speak to the his contact that jacked the site up for us and see what the deal is.

Just got a copy of the promo of the new Dethklok album, damn its some brilliant shit! Have heard some of the material from the cartoon show, but full versions of the songs without dialogue is awesome. I was listening to it at work yesterday and our new Policy Planner was up talking to me "Whats that you're listening to there?" "Dethklok!" heheh! Keeps them wondering. Bloodrocuted and Detharmonic are my favourite tracks at the moment.

Plans are coming together for October, I am looking forward to having a break from work, have a few things lined up, Fishing off the coast of Kawhia with Delmar, Motorhead on the 19th in New Plymouth, Asbiorne coming for a visit and a visit to Delmars with Bat in attendance... Might see if I can get over to see my sister as well while Asbiorne is here, I'm sure he would like to see her and I haven't visited her at her new place yet.
~wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-85511442047344050252007-07-14T21:47:00.001-07:002007-07-14T21:48:10.037-07:00Brains!wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-70408385386398211602007-07-10T18:22:00.001-07:002007-07-10T18:24:02.450-07:00Lesser Evil?wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-38285535376936684252007-07-08T18:04:00.000-07:002007-07-08T18:44:17.444-07:00Computers! Computers! Computers!Well I had a busy weekend. Lots of computer issues to deal with. I had a couple of machines from work mates to look at. The first one had poker room popups, and I removed a virus and mountains of spyware and defragged - lots of boring scans nod32, Spybot, AVG, Adaware etc...

The 2nd was brand new Dell Laptop (17" widescreen!) with Windows Vista...
Now I havent played with Vista much, which meant that it took me twice as long to do anything! Took me a while to work out where to setup a dialup connection, but I found it! Most stuff isnt too different from XP, just look a level deeper or right click - its just different enough to make things difficult until you get used to it.

Then I got to look at one of my own PC's :)
My download/chat box was having some issues, it was running Ubuntu dapper 6.06, but my BitTorrent client (rtorrent) decided it didn't want to work after an update, I tried updating it, but it still played up, it seemed to freeze, resizing the terminal window (its a CLI program) seemed to make it play nice, but within a minute it would freeze again. I'd already given up on Azureus on this machine as it was too slow (1GHz AMD) so I tried deluge, went ok for a while, but was really thrashing the CPU after a while, and I couldn't control it remotely through ssh.
So I decided to install the latest test version of Ubuntu, I went with Xubuntu 7.10 Tribe 2 (an alpha version) I figure I'm not using it for much - how bad can it be?

Took me most of Saturday to get it sorted nicely... I was having issues with the terminal software, couldnt backspace (fixed that one quite easily in the preferences) and then irssi (best irc chat software EVAR!) wouldnt let me use the <alt>Alt-1 combination to change to the status screen!
I ended up installing the gnome-terminal (which had lots of dependencies; mono etc over 60MB) but worked fine once it was installed.

I also had problems with the desktop freezing, applications were still running, but I couldnt interact with anything, couldnt click on windows or menus, change desktops or anything. <ctrl><alt><backspace> got me out of that and left rtorrent and irssi running in their screens :)
I think the problem was with firefox, as once I installed Opera and left firefox alone, everything worked sweet. I prefer Opera on this machine as I can leave it open for days on end whereas firefox leaks memory like a mofo!

The only other annoyance I had was my own stupid fault... I had backed up my home folder and copied it back into the new install, thinking it would keep all my settings for irssi, rtorrent and ncftp.... But when I pasted it back, I had hidden files not showing, so they got left behind...
I had already reconfigured irssi and rtorrent by the time I worked out that the rest of my files were still sitting there! At least I didnt have to start annoying people asking that ftp passwords be reset :)

So now I have a nice shiny new install of Gutsy Gibbon! I'm expecting it to be a little unstable and have a few application hiccups as Gutsy moves toward its final release, but it should all resolve itself over time with updates. Fingers crossed.

Also tried to set up Torrentflux (web based frontend for Bit Torrent downloading) using the instructions here. It worked pretty well, but I have an issue whereby when I add a new torrent it says it 'failed to download' I'm guessing it's related to permissions but I haven't quite worked that one out yet... Oh well I can still use rtorrent in the meantime.

I've also had another private job that I have been unable to do anything on for a while as I have been waiting for data.... Which finally turned up last week.
After examining the two datasets it is clear to me that joining them is going to be a right royal pain in the ass! Too many differences in the data structure and format. I was hoping that job could have been worth some extra money for my hardware fund, but looks like I will have to flag it. :(

And finally, if you are looking for a new kitten, check out trademe for a polydactyl kitty! My kittens are Aunties to this little fella. Although my 2 don't have the extra toes!
</backspace></alt></ctrl></alt>wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636367443715798053.post-23600814157061436922007-07-04T21:16:00.000-07:002007-07-04T21:39:43.870-07:00First Post!Well, here I am.
A proper blog site...

All hail the Crimson King! What does it mean? Well it has two meaning for me - One is the band King Crimson and the other is the from the Stephen King series 'The Dark Tower'. Also my fileserver is called darktower (Black tower case)

I have had some post online before, on last.fm and on my own page what I made. But I figure why not use the tools available here... At least I won't have to do any html to get this up :)

Quickly about myself, I am a 35 year old male from New Zealand. I work for a rural district council as the IT Officer, I look after GIS, Website/Intranet, user support, and some server admin stuff.
I have 2 cats (7 month old kittens), I'll try not to bore you senseless with lots of cat pics - lol.
I'm in computers and the internet (obviously), I download a lot of TV episodes and stuff from the web, as NZ TV is so far behind the US. I'm into music - Mainly metal and prog rock \m/
And I read a lot of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. My favourite author is Brian Lumley.
I use IRC a lot and am the owner of the channel #hamilton on undernet - come say Hi!

This blog is likely to contain all manner of ramblings, including NZ politics, boring stuff that I am doing, stuff about linux (I run ubuntu), music, movies, LAN's, crazy links and pictures... In other words, the usual stuff :)

I'm hoping I can make posts at least weekly, but we will see how that goes :P
wolfrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11116355922830144694noreply@blogger.com1
